Our psychiatry department in university hospital KDU, is a specialized unit that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of mental health disorders. We are staffed by a team of mental health professionals which includes consultant psychiatrists, medical officers, psychologists, nurses, social workers, and other support staff.

Overview of the functions and services that are provided in our department:

  • Diagnosis and Assessment – Mental health professionals in the department evaluate individuals presenting with mental health concerns. Conduct comprehensive assessments (interviews, psychological testing, and medical examinations).
  • Treatment planning – Based on the diagnosis the psychiatry team develops personalized treatment plans for individual patients.
  • Multiple case variations are present in our inpatient and outpatient departments with a rapid turnover. (Main disorders been treated for Depression, Bipolar Affective Disorder, Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective, Obssessive Compulsive Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, Somatoform Disorder, Personality Disorder, Alcohol and substance abuse, Suicide and Self harm, Eating disorder, Post traumatic disorder, postpartum depression and psychosis, ADHD, Autistic spectrum disorder)
  • Medication management – depending on the diagnosis of the patient, Psychiatrists prescribe and manage psychiatric medication. Monitor the effectiveness, adjust doses, and address side-effects of medications.
  • Psychotherapy and Counselling – Psychologists and counsellors provide various forms of psychotherapy (e.g.: cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational enhancement therapy ).
  • Inpatients and Outpatient services – Inpatient services provide intensive care and treatment for individuals experiencing acute psychiatry crises or requiring 24-hour supervision. An outpatient service includes clinics and day-programs where patients receive ongoing treatment while residing at home.
  • Crisis Intervention – we handle psychiatric emergencies and crises. Provide immediate assessment, stabilization, and interventions for individuals in acute distress or exhibiting high-risk behaviours.
  • Specialized treatment programs – we provide specialized treatment programs for Alcohol and substance dependence, Dementia patients and caregivers, mood disorders, anxiety disorders and trauma related conditions.
  • Collaborative Approach – we collaborate with other medical specialities to provide comprehensive care for individuals with comorbid medical conditions or complex psychiatric needs.
  • Research and Education – Our department engage in research to advance knowledge in the field of mental health and to develop innovative treatments. Also play a role in educating medical students and other healthcare professionals through training programs and academic affiliations.

Community Outreach and Support – we have community outreach initiatives to provide guidance to individuals and families seeking assistance. We also provide counselling and psychological support to patients at their residential area.

  • Cushioned walls for the protection of the patient
  • 11 beds in male ward, 11 beds in the female ward, 1 private room and 2 private rooms in the private wing.
